Despite every fashion article's oh-so-perceptive seasonal declaration that gloves are suddenly "trending",
I cannot remember the last time that I actually saw these babies put to good use.

(exception: above photographic illustration)
Evening gloves, formal gloves, semi-formal gloves, matinee gloves, elbow length gloves, opera gloves, leather gloves, knit gloves, driving gloves . .
We're certainly not at a loss for options.
(ps: isn't glove a weird word?)

So why don't we see this phalange-friendly trend in practical action more often?
Could it be due to the subconscious notion that these handy accessories (heh heh) are reserved for debutantes and death-heralding serial killers?
If that's true, I whole-heartedly advocate attempting to abandon this stereotype and embracing the kind-to-cold-weather trend.

In fact, I have an old pair of my grandpas lying around that I've been dying to take for a proverbial drive. Or a literal one. Except for the fact that I'm pretty sure I'd get in an accident after about 3 seconds of admiring my hands.
What do you think? Do you love the glove? Do you see it around more often than I do?
Cheers.
I have a pair of burgundy leather gloves that I stole from my mom a couple of years ago and I have rocked them for several seasons now......so I love the glove!!!! And I can't wait to get more!

I actually keep a pair of leather driving gloves in the glove box of my car because I'm cool (nerdy) like that. I rarely wear any gloves unless it's totally freezing, though, because I like to wear multiple rings, and rings and gloves don't mix. I think I would like gloves a lot more if not for this fact. I have always wanted a pair of super long leather gloves to wear with short sleeve sweaters or dresses in the winter, but my inability to take off the rings I wear every day has kept me from ever purchasing a pair.
ReplyDeleteI do love the glove -Whole heartedly in fact, especially the way they're styled above! BUT, the more I think about sporting them the more they stand out to me as an impractical accessory. I'm a lass who likes to find a balance between the practical and impractical, and I'm slightly ashamed to admit that most of the time the practical side of me wins. Back in the day people wore gloves more often for actual rational reasons, and not merely to make a statement or for style purposes. Now that we live in a day and age where hand sanitizers are abundant and washing your hands is made super convenient, wearing gloves became something to do only if your digits got chilly, right? There is no denying that they are super cute though! I'd love a pair of leather driving gloves (a glove that served a legit purpose), or a dainty pair of lace ones (a lady never wanted to get her hands dirty - for shame!), but I spend a large part of my time eating, typing, and generally man handling things and I don't feel I could effectively do so with a pair of gloves on. Know what I mean??? But I dooooo love them!

I think you're totally right. These are definitely not practical - except for the driving variations (and even then they obstruct my obsessive nail biting habit).
DeleteYou've probably put your finger on (I can't stop myself) the real reason we don't see these more often. What, though, were their more practical reasons back in the day? Did they think gloves would protect against germs, or did they have some sort of social code tied to them? I'm legitimately asking - I actually have no idea.
Hate that I have to trade off between looking super fly and getting in and out of hte bathroom efficiently, though. Bummsvile.

Okay, so I Googled {Oh how I love to Google}, and it seems like it was a cleanliness thing done mostly by the upper crust of society to keep hands clean and to protect the skin. They really do make an outfit look bomb though, dontcha think?
Deletenot a huge fan of gloves myself, i don't really see the point unless they're keeping you warm!

I love gloves, but I am a pro at losing and misplacing them, which is why I don't fork out on really nice ones, cause I would love a lace or satin pair. I'd lose them within a week. In primary school I knit myself a pair of red and cream mittens, to this day I have no idea what happened to them. My current gloves are brown and cream, and I swear its like they're playing hide and seek with me, I found them this past winter and had it for 3 days before it disappeared again. That's because they're not practical so I'll end up taking them off and forgetting where I've placed them.
