I think we're all pretty well aware that "out with the old, in with the new" really means,
"out with the old,
in with the significantly older."
"out with the old,
in with the significantly older."
If I had a penny for every moment I've regretted not hanging onto some once-hideous 90's piece from my past,
I could make, like, a billion of those super cool pressed pennies and probably start a really hipster jewelry company to lure impressionable teens everywhere.

That being said, rarely do I see a throwback piece interpreted 100% straight.
Usually it's paired with some sort of modernizing element to add a nice little twist of relevance.
That's not to say that embellished denim jackets + stirrup leggings + over-sized Mickey Mouse tees wouldn't equal something horrically cool,
it's just to say that very few can pull off such an...arrangement.

So, here's to the past!
And to awkwardness!
And to asking the cute guy to sign your yearbook, tearing it open, and reading the inevitable "HAGS" that assuredly followed.
Alas, below is my modern interpretation of childhood treasures.
What I wish I wore, if you will.
What I wish I wore, if you will.
***
OVERALLS
yay for long crotches
and ambiguous body shapes.
I do miss that special kind of incurable wedgie that comes with a onesie.
Builds character.
***
SCRUNCHIES
Full disclosure
I wear one everyday
***
THOSE AWEFUL SWEATPANTS
With the worst static ever
That got scratchy after one wash
And were always too short
***
BANDANAS
We're a little scatterbrained here,
but the sentiment rings true.
I'd pick a bandana over a headband any day.
Also digging the tight tie around neck thing.
Did you ever hear that story about the girl who always wore a scarf around her neck?
muahaha....
***
JELLY SHOES
To be honest, I think the only pair of these ever in my limited possession were stolen from my sister.
Torn and pink and filled with sparkles.
An obvious must-have.
***
DISNEY PRINCESS TEES!
I think we all know #7 is heaven.
Poci is my homegirl.
I almost did chokers.
But the degree to which I always have, and always will, despise them,
forbade me from thinking of a way to successfully remedy their miserableness.
forbade me from thinking of a way to successfully remedy their miserableness.
Please, prove me wrong.
Until then, I'll take my own advice, and stick to hating what I hate.
Happy #########Throwback Thursday!
I'm so original.

this post is genius. i spend huge chunks of every day lamenting the things i didn't save from my 90s upbringing when i see them come back into style. clear clutch, had one and from claire's no less. friendship bracelets, made like a thousand of them. crop tops, well they probably weren't then but they would be now! i'm loving the sweatsuit and heels look you came up with, i need to make that happen.

I had a tiny black vinyl glitter top handle bucket purse from Limited Too that I donated to Goodwill around three years ago, only to find that I desperately NEEDED it mere months later. I'm still lamenting that one :( And I don't know why I feel the need to share this, but I wore socks with my jellies. And I paired that with elastic bottom sweatpants. It did not look good. Or maybe it did... The 90's look is still a gray area for me as far as taste is concerned - at the time, grunge was supposed to be the antithesis of good taste, but now it's all over the runways, so who knows. At least I am confident that bedazzling was never and will never be a good idea.
ReplyDeleteI wear disney clothing (bought from the disney store itself) like it's my job. And love me some overalls. Pretty sure I still think it's 1999.
