I feel like this space has become much too meta as of late.
Too much thinking about thinking about blogging about fashion.
Too much thinking about thinking about blogging about fashion.
Everyone and their brother-
well, mother, I guess,
You know what?
Scratch that.
Brothers get it too.
Because it has nothing to do with jewels or bows or femininity.
It has to do with finding the material iteration of a particular personality component that speaks both for and about your inner self.
Usually to the extend to which it feels so natural, that it requires no real thought.
Usually to the extend to which it feels so natural, that it requires no real thought.
In fact, I'd even argue that the "perfect piece" is so you, that it says things about you that you yourself didn't fully realize to begin with.
For example.
On a shallower level, this jacket might convey to passersby that I am:
1. Weird.
2. Flamboyant
3. Desperate for attention
But look closer,
and some inner passions come to light:
My life-long obsession with dear Princess(?) Pocahontas and a deep-rooted affinity for Fresh Prince of Belair-esque shoulder pads are just two underlying qualities that come to mind.
Even deeper?
...
Well, the space above in no way illustrates the amount of time that it took me to realize this, but I do believe that, as a child, I had a scrappy sheepskin hide in which I'd curl up and dream of pecan pie and English Setter puppies.
And despite the fact that I always found it to be just the slightest bit disgusting, that memory is what allows this (faux) sherpa jacket to evoke the same peaceful sentiments.

It is this personal depth, that for people like me,
succeeds in creating the illusion of normalcy.
- What I'm drawn to materially is largely instinctual.
There is no disconnect - no uncomfortable level of effort - behind the clothes that I wear - making it nearly impossible for me to judge from an "outside point of view" how my outfits will be received.

Usually, I give put as much thought into what I wear as I assume the average guy does into his baseball cap. (though I'm probably underestimating the calculating thought processes behind such a decision)
In high school, it was cute. In real life, it comes with a couple of consequences;
First and foremost : my inability to gauge the sartorial situation of a certain occasion.
Oh well. At least I (think I) look cool.
Then again,
I did here too:
Just goes to show that "perfect" pieces change as often as we do.
Remember any of yours?

Hahaha, you are hilarious :-D Glad you found THE perfect piece, I'm still waiting for it.
ReplyDeletethose pictures of your pre fashion blogging days are amazing. i have so many cringeworthy pictures from my youth but i guess that's what got us here? better to have made those sartorial missteps way back when than to be making them now. which brings me to this jacket, which is just all sorts of beautiful! between the prints and the sherpa and the fact that it keeps getting better when you turn around i'd say you pretty much nailed it on the perfect piece front!
