The way I see it,
there are probably no such things as "rules"
There are situational norms, at best,
and even those bear reassessing.
For this reason, I find it difficult to put the kibosh on any single style "law" -
especially those regarding bra showage.
The logic you adhered to in 4th grade is likely not applicable in any other area of your life today (though that obviously doesn't thwart the infantile behavior of some of us) so why should that logic hold true for your sense of style?
I realize that a glimpse of the one prematurely pubescent girl's bra strap in Ms. Teisel's math class may have instigated some gossip of the juiciest sort,
but I'd venture to say that today there exist several occasions upon which the visibility of the upper undergarment is more than allowed.
In fact, it may even be encouraged.
Here's my take of when I'd opt for outage:
*under LACY TOPS*
not racy.
lacy.
enough so that the va va voomness of the two cups beneath fail to entirely detract from the overall elegance.
I realize that "balance" is overrated and all
but it's sort of not
at the risk of getting a little too "juxtaposition"-y on y'all,
I'll leave it at this:
Pretty Woman would not have worn sweatpants with a black bra
so I would.
this is tricky, to be sure.
not the peeking, but the "intentionally" so.
Anyone and their sister can suffer a wardrobe malfunction, but it takes a certain innate chicness to achieve exposed bra esteem sans symptomatic sluttiness.
Maybe just the donning of a black, rather than the nude, bra serves as half the battle.
annddddd.....
*showing through SILKY/SATINY BLOUSES*
it's office hoe meets---
fine. it's just office hoe.
but a wee insider tip?:
unbuttoning it may be sexy and silhouette-forming,
but leaving it all buttoned up like yours truly here will negate any sex appeal initially present

blouse: Jcrew, pants: UO (similar), boots: Etienne Aigner, bra: Vikki's Secret |
that's if the polka dot pants and chunky boots didn't do so already.
Cheers.

Deleteits crazy to think back on how things have changed over the years on bra showage.......I am personally all for it if its done in the right way!!!

thanks so much for saying it...because i do love a little bra showage. especially as shown in your examples. the black under the silky top, and the intentional showage are two of my faves. followed closely by the under a lacy top. i have that american apparel dress in blush. i really like it with the black underneath. i wore mine last summer with a bandeau in a similar color. i like it contrasted with black, too. oh...summer, HURRY up!!!

I love your outfit! Bra showage is definitely quite risky. It's easy to make it look cheap and badly styled, but under the lacy tops and other styles you described, it may turn out looking pretty amazing!

ReplyDeleteSuch a handy post! Whenever I try and "intentionally peek through" with look back dresses I get told all day that my bra is showing. Not chic enough- haha.

DeleteC'est la vie. Part of being a style innovator. :)
very great! I am inviting to observe and to get to like our side on fb, as well as for the new fast
ReplyDeleteI have just been buying a black bralet with the intention of letting it peek out of tanks. Maybe it is my MAdonna obsession when I was a child but it is always a look I like. Anyway, you look great, and still sexy even unbuttoned.
ReplyDeleteThanks for coming by, following you on Bloglovin, hope to talk more soon!

Need to buy a cute black bralette like yourself. Only have my basic vikki's one at present. Thanks for the inspo.
DeleteI always loved the intentionally peeking through, but never had the guts to do it. We're pretty conservative here when it comes to fashion -_-
ReplyDeleteLove your cute dotty pants!!!!
I just found your blog! How cute! Love love the pants.

Thanks for stopping by Olivia :)
DeleteLove your outfit and the pictures. It was such a big no no in the past to wear a black bra with a white shirt but now I love it as much as white pumps with a black dress!

I've never understood this 'rule' about no showing bra straps, or bra's in general! With the right outfit, it can look incredible!
ReplyDeleteBesides, it's nice to break the rules once in a while ;)
