When was the last time we saw something new happen in fashion?
I mean, like,
really new.
Not pseudo new,
like plaid
or pleats
or ruffles
or any other trend ever.
or any other trend ever.
but really new.
like,
the first blog new.
Like women wearing pants,
the first high heel,
I'm so accustom to thinking inside the box,
a box consisting of "tops", "bottoms", pairs of "shoes", and #OOTD-style daily selfies uploaded for mass critique,

that I don't know would happen if we spent our time wondering about the whys rather than the whats?
Why are blazers so easy?
Why the extreme appeal of the "perfect white shirt"?
Why do we pierce our ears and paint our nails?

Why shirts?
Why pants?
Why shoes?
It could be overwhelming,
or hyper analytical,
or really really fun.
How much about our material habits and propensities do we take for granted,
and how much could we learn from them if we didn't?
Cheers.
i love your rhetorical question posts....they remind me of one of my favorite saturday night live sketches with mike myers as the woman from new jersey who would ask a random question and then say "talk amongst yourselves" ....having kids also makes me wonder these things as they also ask those questions themselves, quite innocently, when we sometimes struggle to get dressed in the morning. why?
ReplyDeletenow i have to stop and think about an answer.....
let me know if you think of one.

you are really living up to your ifb appointed philosopher status and i'm loving it! i wonder about these things all the time and i wonder even more about what inspires some people to buck these preconceived fashion notions. i once worked with a girl who would wear oxford shirts as harem pants. like who ever said sleeves had to be for arms? gotta love that pioneer spirit and it's exactly why i love visiting museums, to trace the naissance of said spirit. it seems that from the dawn of time we've felt the urge to adorn, be it out of a desire to stand out, to prove a certain status, or possibly just out of sheer boredom. whatever it is it has inspired some amazing sarcophagi, some unreal corsets and petticoats, some dope pantsuits, and more recently some amazing blogs such as your own.

i often ask myself that as well, i have several fashion history books and i've gone to multiple exhibits dedicated to the history of fashion because i like to see what people created before "ootd" and selfies............I will ponder this for quite some time today. I would LOVE to chat with you face to face one day, you just always make my day!
