Do you guys remember the whole "eye" thing?

Of course you do.
And I do realize that it's not over by any means - considering that the "evil eye" is as old as...well, probably the first teenage daughter/mother relationship,
but I do think that the last couple of years saw a serious resurgence of the symbol as the fashion motif du jour.
Dannijo likely played a pretty big role in this. They took something traditionally kitschy and made it "high fashion". They transformed something I initially scoffed at into something I desired.
So when I saw the duo's new motif, the DAISY, I sort of subconsciously jumped on the good ol' bandwagon.
(or bike. let's go with bike.)

Which REALLY annoys me. Especially since my first reaction was to say that the jewelry was cheap looking and trinket-like.
So what the heck am I doing??
How does one company have the alarming power to transform something from
cheap into "chic"?

I'm aware that this question is as old as time,
and that the halo effect is the basis of all marketing,
but COME.
ON.
How can even my little over-analytical mind be so easily swayed?
I mean, it took me all of 3 days to surrender.
I've had Lord of the Rings marathons for longer than that.

What is it about "the cool factor" that I just can't resist?
Is it instinctual?
Am I perpetually predisposed to be a slave to the trendsetters?
Am I abnormally manipulable?
Cheers.

ReplyDeleteA few years ago when Dannijo released the first of their neons I went out and bought a cheap necklace and did my own out of nailpolish!! That's how I did succumb - I made my own version.

I wouldn't say abnormally, perhaps just normally?
ReplyDeleteThe 'cool factor' is seemingly so powerful that we just sometimes get swept up in the crazy that goes along with it. And before we know it we're wearing Marant wedge sneakers, white Zara skorts, Michael Kors watches and now daisy's it appears, regardless of whether we actually like them.
Maybe this attraction to anything that holds the 'cool actor' has it's origins in our childhoods when we just wanted to be like all the other 'cool' kids, (or maybe that's just me), then again maybe it's the fast fashion/blogger world we live in where we just want to be in on the next big thing, maybe it's just safer to be a part of the cool crowd? So many maybes, really who knows
Instinctual? A predisposition to trend slavery? Whatever it is that propels us towards this cool, if you're feeling those daisies you go right ahead and cover yourself in them, cool or not cool, whatever works.

Hello! I just found your blog and I LOVE IT.
ReplyDeleteYou seem like a woman who really thinks about your clothes and what fashion means in society. It's important to think about when we love fashion this much =]
Your style is awesome, can't wait for more!

Funny, I posted something very similar. It has everything to do with branding. Would this trend still be cool if Target had introduced it? No. It's the same reason why we're willing to subject ourselves to the fugliest fashion trends like Isabel Marant's dick deflating wedged sneakers. Dannijo is a trendsetter, propelled by influential fashion figures like The Blonde Salad et al. The pictures of you on the bike are hilarious. I want to hang out with you.

I wanna hang out too.
Delete& you're always so ahead of me. Was this your post on the Wang shoes? I found that one really interesting.
How do you get to be a trendsetter?? Gaining a following? Being part of the cool club? Do you have to prove you know what a trend is before you can set them?
teach me.
Uhoh. I love those dick deflators. But thoughtful writing, indeed.
Deletewow, when my friend said she wanted to get a bracelet "with an eye" on it, i thought she was insane because how weird would it look right? but after i saw it it actually seems quite cool and intriguing.
ReplyDeletei really love the shot of you on the bicycle! you look beautiful :)
followed your blog too btw!
Thank you for the sweet comment! You look like so much fun to hang out with =) This happens to me all the time. Somehow things you thought were uncool transform themselves over time. I love it.
