Had a wee fight with my mom yesterday.
It went a little something like this:
"Mom. I really should have gotten that jumpsuit. Everyone on Instagram loved it.
...silence...
"I think I need it."
Immediate response:
"Gabrielle.
You do not "NEED"
ONE. MORE. PIECE. OF. CLOTHING.
ONE. MORE. PIECE. OF. CLOTHING.
You have really got to stop."
Blah blah blah so on and so on.
You've heard it before. I've heard it before.
And I know.
I know I don't "need" anything else. I know that anything else will be honestly only be a waste of money. It will be solely purchased on the basis that it will make for one more cool blog post, or one good news segment outfit.
But what's a greedy new outfit needer to do?
In my mind, just one is still not enough.
I wish my style were classic enough to render a single silk suit sufficient. I wish I wasn't so immature and fickle with my trend obsessions. But I am. And until I'm not, no single outfit will satisfy me.
But I also can't afford, well . . . anything, really. I make nearly nothing, I purchase too much, and I really really like Greek yogurt. Which is like, disturbingly expensive.
So what am I to do? Do I live vicariously through images? Do I Instagram items I'll never own? Do I whine about what I want in blog posts? Do I incessantly pin impractical "inspiration", in the hopes that one day a secret lover will find my Pinterest boards and generously purchase me the items I so desire and hand them to me while proposing on a canoe in the middle of the wilderness while he is simultaneously dressed like John Smith and I Pocahontas???
Wait what?
Or do I accept defeat? Do I have to learn to live with the same pieces in repetition? Even when my heart tells me that every day should be different?
Or is it not my heart, and just my greed?
WHY AM I ALWAYS SO CONFUSED?
Anyhoo, until I figure it out, I'll just keep wrapping this same piece of fabric around me in different ways and tying real flowers around my wrist in attempts to mimic Dannijo's obscenely expensive trendiness.

shirt: Gap, skirt: piece of fabric/"DIY", shoes: Zara, bracelet: Not Dannijo. |
'Cause I'm cheap and fickle and immature and stuff.
Cheers.

Love this. So I'm unpacking my stuff after moving to my new apartment and its DISGUSTING how much I own. I too always want to purchase something new and my mom ALWAYS has the exact same response your mom had but after seeing just HOW much I own I think I'm ready to take a break for realsies this time. My mom suggested that if I get something new I have to give something away or throw it out. I'm liking that theory a lot. I'm also liking investing in more expensive pieces. I forsee my christmas list looking much different this year.
ReplyDeleteand NO MORE sweaters for me.
Mom's are too wise for their own good.
And I like the real flowers over the Dannijo, so there! :)
Literally why I wrote this post. I've moved 3 times in 1 week and I'm ready to donate everything.

HA! At least your'e honest. I would never advocate buying something to imply instagram it but i have been known to buy shoes simply for their "awesome-factor" and not because theyre practical (AT ALL) funnily enough my mother and I argue about my NEED to accrue more shoes...
ReplyDeleteAs for the Greek yogurt you know it;s just regular yogurt strained right? You can just set some regular yogurt on a clean tea towel sitting in a container in the fridge over night and next morning et voila - Greek yogurt, should be thick a luscious with the water at the bottom. You can also make your own yogurt with milk and a tablespoon of yogurt but I don't wanna over whelm you with awesome ;-)
