Look Sharp, Sconnie - Midwestern Fashion Nerd, Chronic Over-thinker

The Tiers of Fashion Bloggers and Why They're Stupid

Yesterday I saw a fashion blogger.
I was on the Upper East Side, removed from Fashion Week for all intensive purposes-
But it was weird because, right away I knew that she was a fashion blogger (i.e. she dressed like a fool and had a bit of an attitude).

Moments later, I found out that she was apparently a "significant" one-
one who is catered to by PR folk.

And suddenly me, and the people with me who also judged her,
were impressed with, rather than judgmental of, with her attitude and eclectic style.

And I don't really know how to feel about this.
Part of me wants to be glad for those girls who have made it their life's mission to 1. dress as weird as possible or 2. dress as brand-consciously as possible or 3. be friends with people who are consistently able to do either 1 or 2.

The other part of me wants to throw up.

Going to Lincoln Center is generally now thought of as a joke.

The "real" bloggers like to make fun of all the wannabes swarming the outskirts of the center -
hoping to get their picture taken.

But really?

Sure, I admit,

the center has become a you-know-what show,

but head over to the Meatpacking district,
hang outside Milk,
check out the cafes around Chelsea market,
and you'll see exactly the same phenomenon happening with the "Established" fashion folk.

Big name bloggers dress in their designer friends' clothes and parade around in front of their big name photographer friends.

The only difference is that these bloggers sit front row. And these photogs get published by Vogue.
Which may seem like a big deal.
But it's not.

It's like that moment when you realized that you were the same age as your childhood babysitter
but you felt way too young to ever really be that old.

It's all just perspective.
You'll never be as cool or wise as you thought she/he was,
but neither will they.

These guys in the "big leagues" feel just as inadequate as they make us feel. Trust me.

So maybe it's time we stopped catering to this idea that we only respect those people who are already "established",
and start establishing standards for who we respect.

Cheers.

I feel like this sentiment can be applied to life in general, not just the fashion folk. In that every industry or creative field has tiers, and every tier is always looking upwards. But, like you said, everyone feel inadequate sometimes. Everyone has insecurities, some of us are just more adept at disguising them behind some designer shades. The real test, for those of us looking skywards, is to find something or someone worth looking towards, someone who is actively participating and creating and doing, beyond just posing for street style.

Looks like NYC is agreeing with you, Gab.

Beautifully articulated, and I completely agree with the sentiment.

Truer words were never spoken. And, the observation you make is true all over. We have it here in Hong Kong, too. Though I genuinely feel like more people are quite collaborative in nature, we do have a few of the "significant" bloggers also catered to by PR..who are definitely more seen. Some of them are totally unapproachable. Others are totally down to earth and genuine.

You keep calling it as you see it, Gabs. Love it.

God I love this post. I often feel like I am not a real blogger because I don't have a lot of followers or press or WHATEVER but like seriously who cares???? It's also been eye-opening interning at a fashion house because I am very very close to fashion now and I see that the people who work there are pretty normal and hardworking people who don't give in to the hype surrounding fashion and it is really inspiring to see people who just work hard and are creative are doing well because that is more what I strive to be. Ja feel?
