Why Do I Go to Fashion Week?

Dear Friends,

Read this article.
Don't throw up.
Report back.

If this isn't proof that everyone needs a publicist,
then I don't know what is. (#hireme)

But seriously.
Danielleeeeeeeee.

We knew you were annoying. But like - c'mon girl.

Alas, I'll leave my malicious commentary at the proverbial door and proceed to elaborate upon why me, myself and I go to fashion shows. And (gasp), it's not because "I get to sit front row at most of the shows" or because "someone wants to dress me and pay me to be there" or to "be shot by street style photographers" or because I "get put on those websites like Vogue, street style, and all that stuff" (??????????!!) (???!?!?!?)

(?!?!?!!?!?)

Fine.
A little malicious commentary slipped through that last door.
So sue me.
I'm drawn to idiocy like a moth to a flame.
A very, very, (very), dimly lit flame.

So why do I "go" to fashion week?
(I mean, if not being in the front row of "most" shows is really going at all).

(Not gonna let it go.)

1. I admit that, at one point, the prospect of street style was a lure.
At this point, though, I'm well aware of the fact that if I'm not famous, friends with someone famous, or severely emaciated, street style will not be in my cards.
I can, however, still victoriously judge people.
Which is, as you know, more than good enough for me.

2. The show, stupid.
I actually love runway shows.
I could watch models saunter down a runway in clothes to cool music for hours and hours on end and never get sick of it.
In fact, I'd like to experiment how long I could actually do this for.
I'd assume roughly 2 hours, with a brief coffee break, and then an hour or so more.
I love it.
I think it's cathartic and stimulating all at once.

3. The people.
I like meeting random people,
making fun of random people,
staring at random people,
eavesdropping on random people,
making fun of random people,
did I mention I like making fun of random people?

But really.
I'm sure folks make fun of me too.
But that's all part of the fun, right?

4. That weird feeling you get when you're near someone famous.
I kind of hate it.
But it's also a good way to gauge where you are in life.
Like - how much do you care, who do you care about, why do you care about them, how do you feel in relation to them, etc, etc.

I think being near celebrities is an interesting psychological experiment, and I like to check in with my thoughts in regards to these scenarios every few months. Fashion week is a good vehicle.

5. The music.
It's pretty good.

6. The hair.
It's pretty good.

7. The free water.
It's...free water.

8. The Zara at 1963 Broadway
It's the best in all the land.

9. Not the Starbucks across the street.
It's the worst in all the land.
I also have a book deal in the works about the stories told from this Starbucks during fashion week.

I also don't.

But you should.

10. The chance to have bare legs in winter.

I like that I can dress like an idiot and blend in.
Sometimes, aesthetically,
tights just do not work.
It's nice to be abler to embrace that, and know, for a fact,
that I still will not be the weirdest one around.

11.  In sum: None of the "real" reasons that you-know-who
from you-know-what-and-where
goes to #NYFW.

Alas.
To each her own.

Cheers.

May or may not have disregarded the "don't throw up"-rule. Seriously though, what ?!?!??!??!?!?!?

Yikes. It's gross and ditzy, but it's actually honest. Based on her blog, it doesn't look like she plays with fashion or has fun and that's kind of the point of her answers, right? She's going to support her business, not because she loves the spectacle or fantasy.

Maybe this feeds into your previous post about apathy - are the current stakeholders enjoying fashion as much anymore? It feels like there are no new faces; Leandra, Danielle, Bryan, and Rumi are the stakeholders and they don't write with pizzaz or dress with humor. It's all normcore and business. No wonder it's hard to get excited about being in that circle.

Okay I waited to comment on your blog until I had my post up... Bloggers who do it for the "stuff" that they receive instead of for the love of fashion and blogging drive me insane! They don't even seem to appreciate it! While all of us who are "local bloggers" are just like "Hello! If you want someone who is passionate about this... PICK ME!"
